Candles to
light up your life.
Candles have been with us
for thousands of years; and candles have
been giving light all over the world for
this long. Candle history goes back to the
Egyptians and Roman periods. The Egyptians
used reeds from the Nile river and dried
them, and tied bunches of them together to
make the first candles, or torches. During
the Roman period the Romans developed the
wick candle bring light into their homes and
for many other uses. All early candles used
tallow, a whitish tasteless solid, or hard
fat, obtained from cows, sheep and horses.
Beeswax was introduced in the
Middle Ages; and is made from the honeycombs
where bees stored their honey. Beeswax candles
greatly improved the making of candles. It
burned clean and didn’t omit the odors and foul
smoke that the tallow type made. Many candles
are made from beeswax today; however, candles
are also made with wax and other products to
improve the candle’s burning, and therefore they
burn much longer.
